Thriving with ADHD: Top Coping Strategies for Everyday Life

If you're reading this, chances are you, or someone you know is dealing with ADHD. It's no walk in the park (cue Jurassic Park quotes now stuck in my head), but with the right strategies, you can manage the challenges and more importantly, harness the superpowers within your neurodiverse brain! Here’s a quick guide to some ADHD-friendly coping strategies to help you navigate life a bit more smoothly.

Embrace Structure, but Keep it Flexible

Routine is your friend, but rigid schedules can be a nightmare. Try to strike a balance by creating a daily or weekly plan that allows for some wiggle room. Use planners, apps, or even good old-fashioned to-do lists. Breaking tasks into smaller, manageable chunks can make them feel less overwhelming and more achievable. If you have ADHD and Autism, this one will be a constant battle in your head until you find a more flexible approach.

The Magic of Alarms and Timers

Ever find yourself lost in a task or, worse, completely forgetting about one? Alarms and timers are lifesavers. Set reminders for everything from taking a break to starting a new task. Use your phone, smartwatch, or any device you prefer. It’s like having a personal assistant nudging you to stay on track. In my life, if is it not in my calendar, it doesn’t exist!

Prioritise Self-Care

It's easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of daily life and forget to take care of yourself. Make time for exercise, even if it’s just a quick walk. Physical activity can help burn off excess energy and improve focus. Also, don’t skimp on sleep. A regular sleep schedule can do wonders for your concentration and mood. Studies have shown that people with ADHD need more sleep than their neurotypical counterparts, so don’t beat yourself up for taking in some extra zz’s when you need to.

Declutter Your Space

A cluttered environment can lead to a cluttered mind. Take some time to organise your workspace and living areas. Everything should have its place. Use storage solutions that make sense to you, whether it’s colour-coded files, labelled boxes, or a simple drawer organiser. A tidy space can help clear mental fog and reduce distractions.

Find Your Focus Hacks

Everyone has their own little tricks to boost concentration. Some people swear by background music such as specific ADHD playlists on spotify, or white noise. Others find that fidget toys or doodling help keep their hands busy and their minds focused. Experiment to find what works best for you. It might be something unconventional, and that’s perfectly okay.

Don’t Go It Alone

Support is crucial. Whether it’s family, friends, or a support group, having people who understand what you’re going through can make a big difference. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help or just to have a chat. Sometimes, just knowing you’re not alone can be incredibly comforting.

Leverage Technology

There are a huge amount of apps designed to help with organisation and time management. Apps like Trello, Todoist, and Evernote can keep your tasks and ideas in one place. They’re especially handy for visual thinkers who benefit from seeing everything laid out in a clear, structured format.

Be Kind to Yourself

ADHD can be frustrating but remember to cut yourself some slack. Celebrate your wins, no matter how small they seem. It’s easy to focus on what’s going wrong but recognising and appreciating what’s going right is just as important. Self-compassion goes a long way in maintaining a positive mindset.

Professional Help is a Plus

If things feel too overwhelming, seeking professional help can be a game-changer. Therapists, counsellors, and coaches who specialise in ADHD can provide tailored strategies and support. Sometimes, just a few sessions can make a significant difference in how you manage daily challenges. Speak to your GP about sessions if needed.

Final Thoughts

Living with ADHD isn’t always easy, but it’s entirely possible to lead a fulfilling, successful and very productive life. By incorporating these strategies into your routine, you can turn potential obstacles into opportunities for growth and success. Remember, it’s all about finding what works best for you and embracing the journey.
